Finding out the type of drive

For all you IBM gurus:

Given a drive number (e.g. 1=A, 2=B, etc.), is there a way to find out
*exactly* what type of drive it is? The code must not only distinguish between
floppy and fixed drisk drives of different sizes, but also has to point out
RAMDisks, External disks, Remote disks, and logical drives created by the
SUBST command (are there any other types that can be assigned to a drive
number)?

P.S. I'm a C programmer.
