Writing a newsreader for MSDOS

I'd like to write a newsreader for my IBM clone to replace the rather clunky
one I'm using now. However, I have never had any exposure to writing network
software, and I don't have the slightest idea on where to start. Could any
kind soul out there please tell me where I can find information on how to go
about this? A good book on it would be nice.

Many thanks in advance!
