Well, I don't know what the laws are in your area, but here in Canada you
only have to place a copyright notice on something for it to be legal.  In
other words, if I create a new software package, all I need to do is place
something like "Copyright 1992 by ...." on the documentation, disks, etc.
If you want, you can pay a small fee and formally record your copyright.
Although it isn't neccessary, it does make your copyright a lot easier to
enforce should the need arise.  How would you do it formally?  I'd get in
touch with a lawyer who specializes in copyrights and trademarks.  That's
where I got my info from.
