********************************************************* * * * CALL FOR PROGRAMMERS * * * * PUBLIC DOMAIN UNIX TOOLS FOR MSDOS * * * ********************************************************* Queries for unix-style-commands for MSDOS have inspired me to initiate a public domain project for such programs. There are several commercial products, though, but they have grown rather expensive. With the help of some ten experienced programmers, it should be possible to finish the project within half a year. INTENTION: To write and to distribute source code for all common unix tools such as ls, cat, pg, sed etc. on a public domain basis. A standard for command-line syntaxes remains to be decided - suggestions welcome. Files could be laid down on FTP servers and mailboxes for free access. Disk distribution may be added. People being interested will have to get the sources and compile them on their own computer. WE NEED: Unix-experienced programmers having access to anΓ² MSDOS-computer with a commonly used C-compiler, such as Turbo C(++) 2.0/3.0, Borland C++ 2.0/3.0 or Microsoft C 5.1/6.0. To mimick unix-style command-line expansion, wildcard expanding object files will be linked. Since sourcecode compatibility between these compiler versions is essential, no object-oriented programming will be possible (sigh). In the final stage of the project, version-dependent makefiles will be added to ensure compilation also by non-wizards. People with proven experience in a similar project will also be heartly welcome, as will be more experienced people who can contribute non-trivial tools as sed or awk (I don't dare dreaming about lex and yacc). We will not offer all unix-style commands. OS-dependant tools as ln or ps don't make too much sense in a DOS environment. AIM: To offer unix-like functionality to MSDOS-users. Maybe they can be pursued to change to something that deserves the name "operating system" (fingers crossed, I also "grew up" with a "DOS box", and I loved it). PLEASE: State your interest in such a project. If you do so, it would be fine if you were able to contribute. Please also send me messages as, "Yep, I want it! When and where can I get those programs?" The project is for the public, not for ourselves. Those doing the work want to know for whom they spend their rare spare time. TO POTENTIAL CONTRIBUTORS: You will offer only your own work. No software protected by any law shall be shared. If you are interested in participating, please tell me about your programming experience and which programs you could contribute. Maybe some of you have already sources available (as I do) and would like just to add them to the project. If two or more people offer the same program(s) (which will certainly happen), we will have to talk about it. You will keep all your legal rights from your work. You will just give me the right to coordinate the project itself and the distribution of the software. Distribution shall take place iaw the license agreements by the Free Software Foundation. Please email directly (hm@ix.de) or advertise in this newsgroup. I'll summarize. THANK YOU! Harald -- |Dipl.-Ing.
