386/486 Protected Mode Programming. Good books?

Hi, fellow netters.

I want to learn how to program the 386/486 in protected mode. Is there
any good books out there that teach how to program the 386/486 in
protected mode, but without using things like DPMI. I want to program
the 386/486 for protected mode operation directly.

Thank you.

Regards,
Carlos Antunes.

ACJ> supplied by Thomas Nelson Australia, 1993, 227pp, ISBN 0 442 01377 9

ACJ> supplied (I think) by Penguin Books Australia, 476pp, 1991,

Would either of the above two books go into any depth about virtual 8086
mode? Namely, how to setup virtual 8086 mode and handle interrupts and
exceptions properly?

Suggestion - avoid 'The 80386 handbook' which was published by McGraw Hill.
It does describe very well the 386 instruction set and a general overview of
its functions, but provides only *1* example of placing the 386 into Protected
Mode. This example was originally written for the 286 (it says so in the
book!) and only performs limited functions - single task, single segment.
The remaining 'Protected Mode' functions are written using the Phar Lap
DOS extender, and offers no insight to programming in Protected Mode.

I suggest starting with Intel's 'Microprocessor Handbook' - it's got most of
what you'll need, but probably a good book written in not so technical terms
will also help you on your way.

Is the handbook more or less in-depth than Intel's Programmer's Reference
Manual (for 386 or 486)? I have found numerous errors and omissions in the
Prog. Ref. Manuals. For example, almost none of the pseudo-code provided
in the detailed instruction descriptions is error-free, and both books
never mention what happens to INT/IRET in virtual 8086 mode when IOPL is 3!
Also, there were only a couple of programming examples (for Code Builder, I
think).

What I'm looking for is a book that leaves nothing to the imagination,
which I would have expected from official documentation. Either that or
some decent programming examples for the various modes including virtual
8086 mode!

Does anyone have any source code already typed in that they would be
willing to share with the rest of us? I want to try programming in protected
mode, but I HATE typing assembly listings out of books. Anything from books or
your own code if you're willing to share it would be appreciated.

    Thank You,

Re Virtual 86 mode, exceptions/interrupts:

Yes I think so. Have a look at them and see if detail is sufficient.
