DMA memory->memory question

Questions:

1) Does memory->memory DMA, in the mainmemory work on all PCs?

2) Using a program I found in the now dead >The Assembly Language Magazine<
   I was able to move a constant value into the memory on my VGA card. The
   program was supposed to be able to copy, but it only moved a constant
   into the memory. This effect could be very useful for clearing the screen.
   But will it also work with VGA cards from other vendors?(mine is a tseng3k).

 -hope some hardware wizards will answer

    No. Even if it did, the REP MOVSD is faster.
    This was a topic of conversation a year ago. This was the conclusion
    that was reached. There was one guy who knew what hardware needed
    to be implemented... he said that technically, it should work, but
    most motherboard manufacturers don't bother putting that circuitry
    in because its not supported.
