To find the ultimate guru, I am cross posting to many relevant news
groups. If you send me e-mail response, I will summarize it and post it.
I have an application where I need to
1. Compile and run 32 bit code both in Fortran and in C.
2. There is a good chance that these 32 bit codes should multi-task.
My questions are:
1. What is the best 32 bit fortran compiler?
2. What is the best 32 bit c compiler?
3. Can windows multi-task 32 bit codes? (no graphics)
4. Can desq view multi-task 32 bit codes?
5. Can os2 multi-task 32 bit codes? (stupid question, but just to make
sure)
Thank you in advance. Please e-mail me unless it is something to be
discussed in public.

Both do a good job and produce reliable executables. I used to say that SVS was the best. It compiles very fast! However, now they use there own DOS extender instead of Phar Lap and does not work well (in fact, now not at all) with Desqview-386 or Desqview/X. In fact, it does not work well with a non-DPMI environment (i.e., VCPI environment). An yes, I have version 2.8.2 that supports (supposedly) VCPI and I also have QDPMI from Quarterdeck. It just doesn't work with DV anymore. Such a shame since I was one of there customers from way back. I now use NDP Fortran from Microway which does work fine with DV and comes with a nice full-screen debugger (another deficiency with SVS which is line-mode debugger). NDP is slowere but has alot more options. I have also used the i-860 FORTRAN compiler from Microway and it also works well. All these compilers are written in C by the way. >2. What is the best 32 bit c compiler? Don't know this. I have written C but not 32-bit C. >3. Can windows multi-task 32 bit codes? (no graphics) Not very well. NT might but that is vaporware for most of us. >4. Can desq view multi-task 32 bit codes? Yes, very well indeed. >5. Can os2 multi-task 32 bit codes?
