Info on TSR -> database?

I'm a UNIX programmer with experience sending data from background
processes to databases, such as Ingres and Oracle, via the programmatic
embedded SQL feature of those products.

Does anyone have any opinions/advice on performing the same function
on a DOS system?  Specifically,

        a) A database with good APIs suited for this purpose?

        b) Which C compiler to use with that database?

        c) Is there a database server product, and what are its
           advantages/disadvantages?

        d) Good book on writing TSRs in C?

Thanks...
