How do I loadhigh Microsoft Mouse 8.1?

Just noticed today that the Microsoft MOUSE.COM version 8.1
that I *thought* was loading into high mem, isn't.

So I read the README file that came with the upgrade :)
It said to use a command line option /U
So I tried that instead of "lh" - no go.
So I tried both lh *and* /U - still no go.

There is a block of about 27k free in upper memory, heaps
more than is required by MOUSE, but the bloody thing just
won't go there.

Now I *did* find that MOUSE.INI has a line with "LowMem" suggesting
that that is where the damn thing plans to locate itself :-(
Maybe I can change this manually, but do I say "HighMem" or "HiMem"
or something else?

Any guidance would be appreciated, please.

Thanks for your trouble, Ian S.

RE: Loading MS Mouse 8.1 into the HMA

Answer: you can't ! MS took that feature out of version 8 mice since they
had not perfected it fully. The new version 9.0 does support the /U
switch again. Of course you can always load it into a UMB w/ LOADHIGH or
whatever your mem manager's command is. I like the new 9.0, it goes into
the HMA along w/ DOS 6 and only leaves behind a 3K stub, which I loadhi.
Nice !

To load versions prior to 9 into upper memory you need to use
the devicehigh or loadhigh commands. However, even though the
mouse driver only uses about 15k, it needs over 30k to initialise,
half of which it then releases. Hence it won't load into 27k. You
have to either free up more than 27k or, if you're loading other
TSR's high, load them in a different order so that there is over
30k free when you load the mouse driver.

Well the problem is that mouse.com, though it only uses 17k of mem once
installed, still needs 51k free to install initially. Free up some
memory, and try again. Try putting mouse.com before any other things
being loaded high.

Check out the file size of MOUSE.COM. It's huge. And all
of it has to be loaded initially.

Is the 9.0 mouse driver readily available somewhere? (ftp?)

Thanks
