Emm386 Conflict with HardDisk

Hello there,

I have installed a second drive on my 386SX system and my system stalls
whenver it reaches the statement "device=emm386.exe noems". If I disconnect the
2nd drive everything runs without any problem. When you install a second drive
hard disk, is anything in a specific memory location stored that the emm386
device driver is trying to access and makes the system halt?

I would appreciate any ideas or any troubleshooting tips. I have tried
removing the statement "device=emm386.exe noems" from my config.sys and
everything works fine. I have 6Mbytes installed in my system. I tried the ram
option for the emm386 statement but still the system stalls. Would anything in
the frame statement be causing a problem? I think that the default setting for
the frame statement is d000 meaning address d0000 in HEX.

I am using DOS 5.0 and I 'd like to keep this version because a C
compiler that I have does not work well with dos 6.00.

Please feel free to send mail to

chris@iroquois.cecase.ukans.edu

	Thanks, chris.

IMPORTANT: What type of drives (MFM, RLL, IDE, etc) are these and what brand
and model of HD controller? I had a similar problem when I moved to a 386SX
from a 286 and I had to disable the BIOS on my Adaptec RLL controller. If
that is the problem, I think there is a patch which relocates the Adaptec
drive table buffer to an area of memory which will not conflict with EMM386.
I think it is on the Simtel20 mirror sites under DSKUTL directory.

Good luck,
