We have had some similar happenings on our 3.11 LAN. I was told to set
the maximum alloc short term memory to be 1meg more than what your system
is using. For example, my server running NFS Gateway is at 3900000 so
I've set the max alloc short term mem=5000000. The other server (our
main system) is at 499000, so I've set the max alloc short term
mem=3000000. So far both systems are running quite well. The one was
pushing 26 service processes the other day so I reset the whole box.
I've found that the server running any NFS or IPX to IP translation tends
to eat up more memory.
