Hi - Here's one for the NWSAA experts. We're running NWSAA 2.0.30 on Netware 3.12 on a 486. Hostprint 1.11 is also running on the same machine. The server runs pretty exclusively SAA, with very little file/print activity. We started out with 16M memory. When the server was brought up, the Cache Buffers stood at about 43%, and the Alloc Memory Pool was somewhere under 2 MB. Suddenly, with no console message, the Alloc Memory Pool jumped, eating up all the cache buffers, leaving us with 1%, until the server crashed. The wierd part of it is, out of the 7 MB of Alloc Memory Pool, less than 2 MB were in use. What happened to the other 3 MB? I presume these were supposed to return to the Cache Buffer pool but never did, right? Next step - SET MAXIMUM ALLOC SHORT TERM MEMORY=2500000. But that also crashed the server. Some process or NLM must have been looking for memory, and couldn't get any. To test the problem further, we added another 16 MB memory. Once again, the Alloc Memory Pool started out at less than 2MB. Yesterday morning, I came in and found the Alloc Memory Pool at * 15,992,208 * But, as before, less than 2 MB were in use. So I have some 13 MB of memory unaccounted for. The statistics in Monitor don't seem to reveal much. The sum total of Alloc Short Term Memory (Bytes) seems to total the amount of the Alloc Memory Pool in use - 2 MB, not the grand total of almost 16 MB. So the bottom line is - where has all my memory gone? All the NLMs are the latest versions, and I'm running all the latest patches from Novell. This problem is only on the SAA server. We're running 30 other 3.12 servers on the campus, and haven't seen this kind of problem anywhere else. I know that Novell 4.10 handles memory better. It has a "garbage collection" process which might be built for just this kind of problem. We will ultimately be upgrading this server, along with all of our others. But we're not ready just yet, if we don't REALLY have to. Any ideas? -Gershon --------------------------------------------------------------------- Gershon Kunin Internet: Gershon@erez.cc.biu.ac.il Data Communications Tel. +972-3-531-8619 Bar-Ilan University Fax: +972-3-534-4446 Ramat-Gan, Israel 52-900
