St. Bernard's open file manager, a utility provided by the vendor's application, or a plug in for your backup is usually the only way to backup open files like databases, groupware. etc. If the problem is that users are not closing their files before leaving for the day, I place a login time restriction for those users during the time of my nightly backup. This knocks them off the network, closing their files. I hope that this helps.
