It probably is removing them from the tar on the tape while displaying
it. The original on the tape remains as it is.

I had trouble restoring with absolute paths, and now I remove them
before archiving them.

Change the directory to the top level directory on that partition you
are about to verify. Then do a verify with the absolute paths removed.

Also, I didn't have good results with the posix option....but that was a
few revisions back.

tar -cEf SCSI:+S2,TAPE$3 -p -pp -S -V %1 -D rel,c:\tape\totape.ndx "--buffer=buffer,-p24 -i20 -o80 -b1024 -s4096" %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7 %8 %9

This is one of the forms I use for backing up a drive (actually a zip
archive of the drive since it takes care of long WPS paths which tar
would otherwise mangle.

There probably is, but I gave up on verify since it is pointless. You
will get a bunch of "mode differs" errors since the archive bit changes,
as well as the unix type mode flags in the tar archive won't match the
translated mode flags on the disk. (again, this was a few revisions
back).

The verify is pointless because the tape drive I use reads immediately
after write with another head and corrects things if there was an error.
If it doesn't correct it, then it returns an error code to the program
which will stop backing up.

Well, the verify isn't exactly 100% pointless, there is a little bit of
chance things going wrong and the verify catching those things.
However, there is the problem of nonessential error messages cluttering
the error codes.

My preference i to zip things before sending them off to the tape. It
makes verifying easier and takes care of the long names.
