John;

My name is Dean Miller, and I am the Publishing Manager of SAMS operating
systems and networking books. I am the one who ultimately decided not to
publish this book. I don't think Cari Skaggs (my employee) lied to you. It
was only two weeks ago or so that we ultimately decided not to move forward
with the project. Cari's involvement in this project is illustrative of the
problems we have. The two lead authors of this book, David Moscowitz and
David Kerr, do an outstanding job on the chapters they write, however that
total is less than 1/3 of the book. They then leave it to us to find
authors for the remaining 20+ chapters in the book. We spent some time
doing this, but you were one of the few willing to help us out, so we were
not making a great deal of progress on getting the book done. We were now
looking at a July or August title, 8 months late. (part of the success of
the last three books was their release withing 1-2 months of new versions
of OS/2--now all of you users will have had the product for almost a year,
and we could be putting a book out on a relase of OS/2 which could be dated
with 3-4 months depending on IBM's future decisions). This is never a smart
idea.

That being said, I never told David Moscowitz the book was cancelled. What
I told him is that I did not have the resources to line up 10-15 authors to
write 1-2 chapters each. If he wanted to line up and subcontract all the
contributors, we might still move forward.
