What kind of software do you need?

Hi,

We're a firm that provide computer services
to clients by building customised software.
We have recently decided to branch out
and build component style software which would be
attractive to individuals and small businesses.

We have had a few requests for a certain type of software
but would like to get a broader view on what people
maybe looking for, hence this mail. We'd like to find
out the type of software people would like to use, and
what sort of features they would want to see.

Our aim is to make the software cross platform, hence,
we'll be targetng Windows 3.x, Win95, Windows NT,
and OS/2 Warp initially.

TIA,
Randy

Hi Randy...

Something I've wanted awhile is an OS/2 native bibliography-reference
program, i.e something along the lines of Endnote for Windows. Endnote of
course won't run under win/os2 (needs win32s 1.30). There are a couple of
windows shareware programs out there that do run under win-os/2, but
-nothing- for os/2. This is an untapped market. I've seen several lots of
posts asking if such a program exists for os/2 over the years, so the
potential for $$ is there methinks. One shareware author I've talked to
said he wouldn't port his program to os/2, because he is convinces that NT
4.0 will kill OS/2 and that the porting tools would be too expensive
anyway.

Just my $0.01.

Brian

G'day Randy:
What would be really neat is a net browser like front end to organise
and track documents in a business. Click on the hypertext to open the
document with an associated application. Maybe it's already been done??

Cheers

A powerful indexing search tool would be nice. Maybe something that
even drops in to various other programs, either with OpenDoc or in some
other way. The idea is to create an index of words used in files which
is much smaller than all the files themselves, and lends itself much
more quickly to boolean, proximity and other such operations.
Naturally, such a program would have to read all the common
wordprocessor formats, and probably a few other file formats for good
measure (DBF's, spreadsheets, etc.).

There are several programs to do something similar, mostly not OS/2
native. But things like the WordPerfect indexer do not read a lot of
non-native file formats. SearchManager/2 is supposed to do this sort of
thing. I supposedly have a limited license for it included with DevCon,
but was unable to install the included version after several sincere
attempts, so am unable to gather much enthusiasm for it. Anyway,
SearchManager/2 has apparently been dropped as an end-user product,
instead being targetted for developers wishing to include the technology
in their own products.

Yours, Lulu...

So far, there is no desktop publishing program for OS/2.
There have been many inquiries in this group, and others, so I'm sure
the demand is there. Hope this helps.
