The simplest way is to install galleria and the supplied bitware9.sys driver into config.sys.Wallah!!!!! The trick is in setting it up to run under winOS/2. The supplied software in the box is for windows 95. It will not run. The scanning software runs under windows 3.1 using win32s ver 3 which unfortunately is not supported under when OS/2. Dont despair. You can easily however set up an older scanning application to do the job. This older application can then be used to scan into paperport (the supplied version .B is a win 3.1 program pure and simple) and allow OCR. Here are the details . Okay. You will need HP DeskScan II v2.2 available from the HP support ftp site ftp://ftp1.hp.com/pub/scanners/software/ds22en.exe This program is for older HP scanners however you can get it to work flawlessly under winOS/2 for B&W and greyscale scanning on the 5P. *** I still have not figured out how to get deskscan to scan in colour even though it should be capable!**** ( I am using an adaptec 1520 scsi card so I cant comment on the use of the supplied HP minicard) Before you install the program you must ensure that certain device drivers are loaded in your config.sys. BASEDEV=OS2SCSI.DMD /# basic scsi enabler BASEDEV=AHA152X.ADD /# specific scsi adapter driver BASEDEV=OS2ASPI.DMD /# os/2 aspi driver. needed for some os/2 scanning programs eg copyshop/2 DEVICE=D:\OS2\MDOS\VASPI.SYS /#Eliminates the need for aspi dos drivers This is an os/2 native driver and comes with warp4. Next you will need the version of the dos driver specific for the hp5p. It comes with the version of scanning software supplied with the HP 5P. It is SJIIX.SYS obtained by installing the original software supplied under win 95 but you can probably get it simply by installing the software under winos/2 (even though it will not function.( Also probably available from the HP support site.) You will also need the serial number for paperport. Again I obtained this by win95 installation. Next you will need to create a copy of your WIN-OS/2 Full Screen command prompt and alter the following setting DOS DEVICE D:\TCPIP\BIN\VDOSTCP.SYS D:\WIN31\DESKSCAN\SJIIX.SYS /#a dded for deskscan support /#note you will not need to add device= /#this should reference the version of SJIIX.SYS from the supplied software Next install deskscan and then paperport. You should then be able to run paperport with easy scanning , document management and OCR. BINGO the Jackpot! Also if you have the windows version of wordpro installed you can OCR directly into wordpro which is much more satisfactory than write and completely compatible with wordpro96 for OS/2. If anyone has any problems please post a reply and I will answer or at least try. Also if anyone has any suggestions on how to get deskscan to colour scan please reply or email me. For the moment the solution is to use galleria , which by the way will not function after you have used deskscan and requires a reboot to recognise the scanner.
