What's the best 3D graphics card for OS/2?

Hi, I've been reading quite a few articles on 3D graphics cards lately and of course all the testing is done for Windows 95. I'd like to know whether anyone have had any experience with using any 3D card with OS/2 Warp 4.0. I'm particularly interested in getting a S3 based card using the 3D Virge chip, mainly for the price. I've heard the Matrox Millenium and Mystique have good OS/2 drivers, but I haven't heard anything about S3 3D Virge based cards. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Randy

Voodoo gives the best 3D performance but you need a 2D card in your computer already and it is the most expensive. Rendition cards (Screaming 3D, 3D Blaster, Intergraph Intense 3D and Total 3D) have good 2D/3D performance and much faster than virge in terms of 3D acceleration. I think you can get a rendition card under $200. I hope this helps. ===================================================================== | A Traveler between dimensions | | + ------------------------------+ | | | | In the Kingdom of Drakkar, I am known as <Narius the Mentalist> | | To the denizens of Britainnia, my name is <Seldon the Avatar> | | The Terran Confederation pilots call me <One the Cat Slayer> | | | | Seldon Dragon | | #UDIC# | | | | <<Kay-Yut Chen>> | | | =====================================================================

I works good and Matrox give you great driver support. Matrox is the most recomended brand amongst OS2 users because of great support. R.D. Dos, Windoze, Fat, 1980's technology. No Monopoly is strong enough to stop the power of OS2 Warp. Warp is reincarnated, and is now IMMORTAL!

If you're looking for a quantitative comparison of the current crop of 3D boards, just to find out what the hardware does and how they compare, Computer Gaming World did a comparison of several of them in their November issue. The comparison is online at this URL: http://www.zdnet.com/gaming/content/961115/3dwave/3dcards.html They came to the same conclusion as everyone else I've heard of who have made the comparison: The 3Dfx Voodoo is the hottest chip around. (They also weren't that enthusiastic about the Mystique. Apparently it is seriously short in features which are coming to be considered standard like bilinear filtering [which prevents chunky-pixellation on texture maps when you get too close] and alpha blending [for transparency]. It also came up considerably slower than the other boards tested.) The big problem with the Voodoo is that it was originally designed for use in arcade systems, and it doesn't play well with other display chips; if you use a board which has the Voodoo on it, you're either all the way in 3D mode or you're all the way out of it. However, all is not lost. 3Dfx has released a new chip which is designed to work better with other graphics chips; it is known as the "Voodoo Rush". You can read about it at: http://www.3Dfx.com/products/voodoo_rush.html Hercules will be bringing out a board very soon which uses the Voodoo Rush, called the "Stingray 128". That's the one I've been waiting for. --------------------- As I was wandering around the Hercules site just now, I spotted this URL: http://www.hercules.com/support/drivers/term/t643d/ It has drivers for Warp for the "Terminator 3D" board. The Terminator 3D board uses the S3 Virge. In CGW's tests, the Terminator came out middle-of-the-pack. There are also drivers for the "Dynamite 128" at: http://www.hercules.com/support/drivers/dynamite/dyn128/default.htm These drivers are labelled as being optimized for Warp 4.

I've > heard the Matrox Millenium and Mystique have good OS/2 > drivers, but I haven't heard anything about S3 3D Virge > based cards. OS/2 has absolute no support for 3D hardware. I guess this would make OS/2 too "kitchen toppie like". Definitely stay clear of any Rendition based boards -- it's not that the chips is bad, it's just that there are no OS/2 drivers available for them, and Rendition isn't going to make any (Before the 'OS/2 lemmings' fire off on this, crying out that this is obviously part of the Microsoft-conspiracy, please take an economics course at your local community college first. Thank you.) S3 has among the best OS/2 support there is. There are ViRGE drivers available (although they are only for the 2D aspect -- OpenGL support would be a waste of time being S3's 3D support isn't all that great) from www.s3.com. The Matrox boards' 3D acceleration is not even worth mentioning. If you want good 3D and like the board you have now, get a VooDoo based board. It works beside your current video board, and delivers the best performance. Before buying a 3D board, however, you should note that more and more of the new 3D games are Win95 native (GLQuake for example) and of the DOS accelerated games, few work under OS/2. OS/2 simply is not a viable platform for games anymore (Like it ever was, but it's gotten beyond tolerable) IMO, you should factor in the cost of Windows95 (for use with Boot Manager...OS/2 is still good for office related things) into your new 3D card, if you don't all ready own it that is. -Dave

Hi everyone One of my friends has bought a S3 Virge but he hasn't been able to find any drivers for OS/2 Warp 4.0 that works. Now he's running OS/2 in 640x480x16, because if he install the drivers the icons disappear. However I'm using a Matrox Mystique, and it's running just fine. It's the best gfx-card available. Greetings Bjoern

Don't think they ship to Oz. (Even emailed Elsa US for no response.) Greg
