What is Exim? ------------- Exim is a mail transport agent, developed at the University of Cambridge by Philip Hazel <ph10@cus.cam.ac.uk>, originally for use on Unix systems connected to the Internet. Please see http://www.exim.org/ for more details about it. This Port --------- This is a port of one of the recent Exim distributions, 1.73, to OS/2. While it lacks the security features of the Unix version, it retains the other features which make it an improvement over sendmail, such as: o Speed. In tests so far, it delivers mail a lot faster than OS/2 sendmail. The Unix version has been reported to be able to handle 13,000 deliveries/hour. o Verifying of incoming addresses as they are received. o Allows multiple users, *and* multiple mailboxes per user. o Sophisticated mail filtering options - including per-user .forward files and mail filters. o Easy to queue remote mail up until you connect to the Internet. o Easy to set up gateways to other services -- UUCP mail, mailing lists, mail-to-news, etc. o And all the other features you'd expect of an MTA. See the documentation available at the above web site for full details, of course. The Test -------- Ideally, I'm looking for people who don't mind testing alpha software, and can send me comprehensive bug reports when something does appear to be broken. In an ideal world, I'd like them to dig into the sources and send me a finished patch to cure the problem as well, but... ;) If you would like to participate in this alpha-test, please e-mail me on <avatar-exim@arkane.demon.co.uk>, with who you are and what sort of environment you plan to test it in, and I'll get back to you as soon as the alpha-release is packaged up. Thank you for your interest in Exim for OS/2! Alistair System Requirements: -------------------- o An HPFS partition. o Some form of TCP/IP network or internet connection. o The Emx runtime libraries, v0.9c. Guarantee --------- None whatsoever. This is the ALPHA version of the port. While the most basic features - sending and receiving SMTP mail, storing it locally in a Unix-type mailbox - appear to be fully operational, most of the more sophisticated features remain UNTESTED, or are still in the process of being tested. This software may work, fail, cause you to lose mail, or cause demons to fly out of your nose. If you can't live with that, we advise you not to participate in this alpha-test. Sorry, but that's life in the world of pre-release free software. -- Alistair J. R. Young Computational Thaumaturge & Son of Ether. Arkane Systems Ltd.
