  Thank you Osmo.

Thankfully the ESS is not a joke! The driver from the IBM site
loads without crashing and sound works.

Installation was rather confusing. Due to previous trouble and
chasing drivers my versions had got to 2.04 or something but this
February 1999 release is still "1.03". MInstall asked whether I
wanted to overwrite something newer with something older. I said OK
with some trepidation. Further, like on some previous occasions
MInstall hanged towards the end where the wide colourful progress
bar would advance to about 70% and then hang. OS/2 itself was till
OK as shown by the system clock ticking merrily away but you
couldn't do anything. I didn't have Watchcat installed and the only
way to regain control was to use the three fingered salute. I had
to manually reactivated/edit Startup.cmd, config.sys and
\MMOS2\MMPM2.ini.

MMOS2 was moved to FP39 without anything stopping. Midi as well
as digital sound now works perfectly with everything at FP39 level.

  To Maarten.Hoogerland@nowhere.earthling.net who posted about
ESS1869. He has my sympathies.

My problems with ESS1868 and ESS1869 related only to Warp 3. I
didn't have such problems with Warp 4.
