I followed a previous hint to reduce the options/general preferences 
page history setting to 2 to 5 days versus the default of 30 days.  
This improved things greatly for me.  I since have changed to the 128 
bit version of netscape 2.02 that is available on CD only (for $15) 
from IBM and kept that setting - the problem is essentially gone for 
me.
