Annoying Speaker Noise!!!

After testing a Dynalink V34 modem for a month and being totally
satisfied with it's performance, I bought my own today. I had been a
Supra fan but since they decided to ignore those of us without PnP PCs
or OSes, I looked elsewhere.

The first thing I noticed was that my new modem had an AT&T chipset as
opposed to the borrowed one's Rockwell chipset. Are the AT&T chipsets
ok? It works, but on one BBS where I always got a connect, I'm
getting the occasional lockup after CONNECT 28800/MNP5.
It could be a problem at their end, I guess.

Anyway, I noticed a curious thing when it dials. When the modem picks
up carrier there is this intense static/clicking sound coming from the
modem speaker while it's dialing and negotiating. Maybe the modem is
faulty? The funny thing is that it ONLY occurs when using native OS/2
comms apps like ZOC or the IAK, or when using Telix for Windows under
Win-OS/2 or Win95. Telix for DOS seems to be the only comms program
on my PC that doesn't cause the speaker to bug out (even when running
under OS/2!)

I did notice a fluctuation in the clicking if the disk drive was
accessed while it was dialing.

Could it be picking up interference from the IDE controller? The new
modem is in exactly the same slot as the borrowed one was and it never
skipped a beat with its speaker or anything.

Why are two modems with identical part numbers never the same!!!

Like I said, I'm using OS/2 Warp with ZOC and IAK as my comms
software. My init string is AT&F&C1&D2.
I also use Win95 occasionally with Hyperterminal or Telix for Windows
1.10.

Thanks :-)

I had a Dynalink 28.8 and it too suffered from lock-ups on one
service, unfortunately that was my main ISP. It needed a power-down
of the system to unhang the modem when this happened. Is this the
same as your hang? I've got another modem now (Trust 28.8) and
everything works fine.
