It's the same kind of emulation of Intel x86 as Appels and those found in some unices. It's made by Insignia, a company who specialises in software emulation of Intel x86 and DOS/Win3. As all software emulation it's rather slow compared with recompiled applications (usually a factor of 3x slower). A more intersting technology is binary translation. You do the translation only once for each application, and beacuse you avoid doing it at execution time (as in normal emulation) it's faster and you can also spend more time for better optimisation of the translation. Digital has done this with VAX -> Alpha and will now release this technology also for 386 -> Alpha under NT. This means what You can easily translate your Win32 applications for Intel to run natively on the Alpha CPU. Of course it won't be near as fast as a real recompile for it, but it's a lot faster than the current type of emulation. m a r t i n n -- Martin Nisshagen MTS Technology, Sweden martin@mts.se (MIME 1.0)
