: Yes, unix has always been opaque to users and administrators
: alike. That's why unix admins get the big bucks.

: Linux has only slightly improved the situation. I have been
: looking for information on how to mount a tape drive (DAT dds2,
: scsi internal). Of the two books on linux (over a 1000 pages each)
: there is a total of one and a half pages on tape drives with no
: mention of how to mount one, or what to do if mounting fails.

Try the howto files. and 'man mt'
For an ATAPI (which I'm told mounts via an interface to the scsi
device driver) I use the following script to do backups:

#!/bin/sh
        if [ $# = 0 ]; then
                src=.
        else
                shift
                src="${@-}"
        fi
        mt -t /dev/ht0 rewind
        mt -t /dev/ht0 eof

        tar -czvS --totals -f /dev/ht0 $src

        mt -t /dev/ht0 rewind

Always do a rewind after eof/tar to write the cache.

You can find the mount point in /proc/scsi/scsi or by carefully
watching the boot.
