I think many OS developers like to claim this, but it's not true. I've got great Japanese tools running under generic X windows, no hacking the underlying code. There is excellent Windows Japanese packages that emulate the Japanese Windows product under normal Windows. Supporting multi-byte languages is just a matter of being able to displaying and inputting the text. Supporting this everywhere, such as in the menus and all the system text, is another matter. But for reading and writing it's doable. (of course, it's great if the OS provides support for it and doesn't weasel out) -- Darin Johnson djohnson@ucsd.edu -- Toy cows in Africa
