Can anyone tell me or suggest me any documentation or site for using
OS/2 Warp Server as DNS Server. I have not got enough information about
this. Thank you very much for your helps.

It need not be very difficult, and the setup is more or less the same as for
the unix bind, which by the way is ported to os2 aswell.

It consists of a named.root which points to the root dns's which may be those
offered by your isp, or the actual defined root dns's, or possibly both.

It also consists of named.dom which defines your domains hosts names
and ipaddresses.

It also consists of named.cache which is used by the named to cache
previous lookups.

The last file is named.rev which is used for looking up ip-addresses from
hosts names.

More or less... There should be sample files included in the base install.
Otherwise I could mail/post a typical sample setup.

/Good luck

Hi Christian,

Can you post up a DNS? I looked at the example config, but it was
confusing.

Also, can you shed some light on the difference between DDNS and DNS?
I think Warp 4 has DDNS, but I really need something on Warp Server
Advanced.

Thanks.

Alex

I've never actually used the ddns part in os2, and it's a bit more complicated
to setup, but the general idea is as follows.

The ddns (dynamic domain name server) allows a user with a "floating"
or dynamic ip to have a constant ip hostname. For example when you
connect by modem to your isp you're probably assigned an ip address for
each call, and these are not necessarily the same from time to time.

With the ddns, your computer can always be referred to as
myos2computer.mydomain.com, even though the your ip address may differ
from time to time. Normally the dns must have a static ip assigned to your
hostname. This way you can have a website on your home computer
which is always known as www.mybest.wow, even if you move
around. The caveat of course being it's only accessible when you're
online....

The dhcp (domain host control protocol) is the protocol with which you
can request an ip address every time you boot. This is a nice feature
for anyone who's admin'ing a big lan: Did I assign 192.168.0.134 to any
computer, or is it free for use on this new one?

With the dhcp server you simply assign an ip-range, say 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.100
which is assigned to the computers on the lan as they boot. The dhcp
also supports configuring d/dns gateways, proxies etc.

Win clients that normally don't know about ddns, can be "helped" by the dhcp
server which asks the hostname from the computer requesting an ip-address
and tells the ddns that host xyz now has ip 192.168.0.123.

Os2 (or any ddns client) can tell the ddns itself, and therefore doesn't
have to rely upon the dhcp to a) support ddns, and b) know which
ddns to update.

   more or less.....

I'll post a sample config tomorrow (when I'm at the server...)

Regards

Christian Olrog
