Well, gang, I really screwed up now! I upgraded my system and added a new drive and Win 95. My intent was to be able to boot either OS/2 on the old drive or Win 95 on the new drive. Well, somewhere along the way, I zigged when I should have zagged and can now only access my OS/2 drive via the command line *after* using a few of the install disks. Yes, I did not have a backup. What I need to know, is what do I need to do to, first, be able to access my OS/2 drive in order to rescue my files? And, second, what do I need to do to be able to boot either OS/2 or Win 95? Thanks for whatever assistance you can provide. Please email me at <odat@ccnet.com> Don R. How are your drives partitioned and where are the OS's? Edmond Dantes edantes@cts.com PGP public key and resume (I'm always looking for work) are available at: http://www.free.cts.com/crash/e/edantes

Something to try is boot off of the OS2 utility disks. then format a bunch of floppies. then copy the files you want to the floppies. Or if you have another machine, take the drive(s) off the first one and put them on the second. Boot off of the utility disks and copy from drive to drive. By using the floppies you avoid drive association problems. experiment without delete. Bruce

If you add the new drive as the slave, you won't be able to boot Win 95 off it, as it insists on being on drive C:. If you put the new drive in place of the first (master) drive, and move the master to the slave, it will change drive letters, preventing OS/2 from running. OS/2 can boot from anywhere, but in this case you'd have to reinstall it, so that everything would point to D: instead of C:. : Well, somewhere along the way, I zigged when I should have zagged and : can now only access my OS/2 drive via the command line *after* using a : few of the install disks. I'd need to know more about what you've done so far before I could advise you what to do next. That is, what are the partitions on each drive? What can you boot? Etc. : And, second, what do I need to do to be able to boot either OS/2 or Win : 95? OK... When I first got this computer, it was all DOS/Win 3.1. Later, I installed OS/2 over that, as a Dual Boot system. Finally, when I wanted to install Win 95 (and Linux, but that's another story): I used Partition Magic to shrink the C: partition. I installed OS/2's Boot Manager, made a new primary DOS partition (also C: -- only one can be active at a time), and installed Win 95 on it. Win 95 rewrote the Master Boot Record, disabling Boot Manager; but all I had to do was boot OS/2 from the startup disks, run FDISK, and mark the Boot Manager active. Then reboot, and voila! -- William McBrine | http://www.clark.net/pub/wmcbrine/html/ wmcbrine@clark.net | PyrE! Make them tell you what it is!
