With great reluctance I've have had to move from Warp Connect to windows. The story follows: As a consultant I recommended Warp Connect as the operating system on a new 5 node LAN for a small company. The machines are 486 dx4-100 with 16mb generic clones. The machine planned for the server has scsi HD's and all have generic ethernet network cards and MS compatible mice. Warp did not like the scsi adaptec compatible controller in that the FD ran about 10 time slower than normal. It didn't like the network cords in that it could never find them and it didn't like the mice so that there was no install choice that would enable them to work without unpluging and plugging each in after warp had come up. I spent days pouring through news groups and found many items that seems to apply. Alas none worked. Finally I ran out of runway and had to change course to something that will run the win applications. The moral here would seem to be that Warp Connect simply isn't ready for prime time. I know that some of you out there could have ultimately solved all of these problems. I couldn't do so in the time available. All of these items do very well under Netware 4.1 (scsi drivers and network cards). And all do well with DOS/WIN with the NW client. I was astonished that so many thing would give warp Connect a problem. I use and will continue to use connect on my personal machine. If win 95 avoids these kind of problems along with its easier interface os/2 will really be up against it. I would like to find out what the solutions are for this set of connect problems and I may over time. My colleagues will be greatly relieved in that they will no longer have to listen to me extol the virtues of OS/2. Until I can load warp and/or its successors without incident I cannot recommend os/2 to any of my customers who might want to use generic network cards, mice or scsi controllers. The risk to me of being able to meet a commited schedule is simply too high. If there are any specific question, I'll try to respond. regards krl Kermit R.
