Using DOS TCP/IP Apps under OS/2 2.x

    Hi,
We've got got a Token Ring network with 200 computers running either
ms-dos 5.0 or OS/2 2.x with (Dos ) Lan Requester 3.0 and TCP/IP OS/2 1.2.1.
Many people under Dos use CUTCP or Winqvtnet with the Clarckson packet
drivers, and I've found a neat implementation of the POP3 protocol that uses
these packet drivers and Turbo Vision. We would like to generalize the use
of TCP/IP and POP for our mail because we can use our Sun's mailer without
having yet another mail circuit that would only work on the PCs.We've even
found a POP implementation for Mac.
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any implementation of the protocol
under OS/2 :(. So I'd like to use temporarily the dos apps. My question
is : Is there any way to get Lan Req 3.0, TCP/IP 1.2.1 and the packet
drivers work together ? I've vaguely read that Lan Req 3.0 can run a certain
number of Dos network apps, but of course these are mainly IBM's software
(those that use netdev.sys for example).
Can anyone help me by telling me if it is possible or not and, even
better, if there is a POP3 implemetation under OS/2? Thanks.

It will work if you have Network Transport Services/2, which provides
802.2 services to the DOS sessions. Assuming your software can speak
802.2, you'll be all set.

NTS/2 is available from IBM Direct in the United States for about $55.
IBM Direct can be reached at 800-IBM-2-YOU.

After following the discussions about NTS/2, I have a question. Does
this only work with token ring? (it seems that anyone who has talked about
it is running token... and only token)

Thanks

I am glad to say that I have been using NTS/2 over Ethernet for the last
several weeks. It's wonderful and very easy to install.

NTS/2 works fine with ethernet - AS LONG AS you don't want to do what the
original poster wants to. Namely, the Virtual 802.2 emulation in the VDMs
does not support ethernet flavored packet drivers. Packet driver <->NDIS
shims do not work either. Only strict 802.2 applications are said to work
with 802.2 in VDMs on ethernet, and I don't have any of these to test. ALl
I do know, is that the IBMTOKEN.COM packet driver, which is supposed to use
the 802.2 interface, does not work on an ethernet equiped machine, though it
appears to initialize properly.

More than that, I do not know... (All of this made my day after being told
throughout development of NTS/2 that it would solve my problems with programs
that require packet driver support. :-( )

Ah, but are you using packet drivers in VDMs, alongside LAN Requestors or
TCP/IP 1.2.1? That is what doesn't work on ethernet equipped machines.

IBM could have solved more problems by virtualizing the NDIS interface to
the VDM(s). Now *that* would be useful/flexible/valuable improvement!
