Are device drivers swapped out when not in use or are they locked in memory? We're trying to find out the cost (in RAM) of installing some network software. If they get swapped out, there's no problem. If they don't, and the amount of memory they use is nontrivial, we need to consider being more selective about which machines get it. To be more specific, we're considering the TCP/IP and OS/2 Peer that come with Warp Connect. Thanks for any help. - Keith -- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Keith Bennett Bennett Business Solutions, Inc. The 1st code and 1st data segment are, by default, non-swappable. After all, that's where the ISR exists. A driver can make its pages swappable, but it's usually easier to create a 2nd segment and move the non-critical code in there. -- Timur "too sexy for my code" Tabi, timur@vnet.ibm.com Architect, OS/2 Warp realtime MIDI subsystem http://timur.austin.ibm.com (internal IBM only) http://www.shirenet.com/~crusader/Timur (external)

Physical device drivers (.SYS), adapter device drivers (.ADD), device filters (.FLT), and device managers (.DMD) are not swappable, although their data may or may not be depending on how the driver works. NDIS drivers (.OS2) are not swappable either, to the best of my knowledge. Actually, I thought that the daemons that get installed for those products had a bigger footprint than their device drivers. Those are swappable. Cheers, Brad Benson CDS, Inc.

Exactly what is locked down is dependent on the device driver; some will lock in a small portion, load in more when the device is opened, and release when the device is closed. I don't know of any drivers that are managed by the swapper, but I won't go so far as to say it can't happen. =========================================================== Stan Morrow Stern & Morrow Software Consulting, Inc.
