Hi y'all:
Does anyone know if OS/2 uses any the 3 counters of the I8253 ?
If so, which ones are being used and what is it using them for ?
Does any one know of a 'protocol' for 'sharing' any of them ?
The 'granularity of the timeslice' problem is really starting to
get to me as it is for a few other people on these lists.
HRTIMER just doesn't cut it. It's really just a higher resolution clock.
I've got a semi-functional driver here (more like a prototype)
that will use mode 0 (interrupt on terminal count).
This should allow us to be interrupted at the end of a specified
number of I8253 ticks. The plan is to go to the top of the time-critical
queue, arm one of the counters and when it triggers have the interrupt
handler notify a semaphore. The problems I'm having seem to have to do
with some other process 'interferring' with the timer or perhaps
me interferring with it. There seems to be no graceful or elegant way
to share these timers.
Anyway, if anyone has any words of wisdom, or any insight
at all into this matter, your help will be greatly appreciated.
mike
