reading bitmaps

I am trying to write a C++ program to read and access the pixel data in a
bitmap file and print the data to a file. I want to keep it simple, just load
and read the bitmap file in binary form, then access the pixel data array and
write the array to a file so that I can use the data later.
I can read the headers, but am not sure how to read the pixel values.
 PLEASE HELP.
