Developers SIG April Meeting
Multithreaded Presentation Manager Programming
Skilled OS/2 developer and author William Law will take the stage
April 10th to give a general introduction on how to write
multi-threaded PM programs. He will give a brief discussion on the
concept of threads and why multi-threaded PM apps are necessary.
Then he will go through the mechanics of starting threads in C and
C++ (using the IThread class of IBM's UI Library). Then Bill will
expand on implementation techniques in a set of further examples
(the basics have simpler examples showing how multi-threaded apps
work better). The examples demonstrate such things as using an
object window to do thread communication. He also has an event
semaphore class to show thread synchronization.
Bill will also explore some advanced topics: Using "queue messages" to
communicate rather than window messages (eliminates need for an
object window) and, how to move the loading of .dlls into a separate
thread at program start up so that users see a quick "Loading"
message and lets them switch focus to another application while PM
might otherwise be blocked during that time.
Bill Law
Bill Law graduated from the University of Michigan in 1980. He has
been developing software for OS/2 since 1987 and has been designing
and implementing object-oriented C++ class libraries for the past five
years. He now works for Taligent, Inc. in Cupertino, California.
Bill Law is one of the authors of the excellent book, "OS/2 C++ Class
Library, Power GUI Programming using C Set++," published by Van
Nostrand Reinhold. This book is highly recommend for developers
using the powerful user interface class library included with the IBM C
Set++ compiler.
Directions
Take the Shoreline Boulevard North exit off US-101. About a block
before Charleston, turn left on Plymouth, and then right on Joaquin.
1055 Joaquin is on the right. There is plenty of free parking. We
meet in the conference room on the second floor. Please be prompt
as you can only enter the building between 6:45 and 7:30.
