Nothing special about the Gateway.

After a good deal of research I concluded that the most widely
supported and best all-around CD-ROM drive value is the Toshiba
XM-3301. Street price is around $400 (and dropping). Toshiba is just
releasing a new faster drive, the XM-3401, but it is not yet generally
available.

For a SCSI host adapter your best bet is Adaptec or Future Domain. I
use the low-cost Adaptec 1510, which works great. The only "drawback"
is that it is not yet supported under Windows NT -- you need the more
expensive 1540 or 1542 for that. If you care about DOS support, the
1510 comes in a bundle with DOS CD-ROM software called "The Multimedia
Connection", with a street price of about $170.

Best regards,
John

p.s. When you order the IBM PDK CD, you get a reasonally good offer
on a Toshiba XM-3301.
