HP 4p Scanner install, No vaspi.sys load??

I am setting up my HP 4p scanner, following hthe instructions from
HP, and the useful suggestions from persons on this list. However, I
am running into a problem.
On boot, I get the error, line ..., device driver c:\os2\mdos\vaspi.sys
not loaded. I first followed the HP instructions to the letter, using
the older version of deskscan, placing the drivers into the win-os2 session,
etc. On starting the windows session, I got the error message that no
ASPI or CAM compatible driver was loaded, and so no connection to the
scanner. I then added the line, which the system will no load, no dice, then
also added the basedev=os2aspi.dmd line, based on the vaspi.sys help in
os/2. Still, no dice. vaspi.sys does not load, and HP cannot make a
connection to the scsi and scanner.
This is the only scsi in the system, the HP original card. I am using
an IDE drive. I do have a SB 16 card installed, and a Colorado Jumbo 250
tape drive. I'd like to just use the HP hardware and software to start with.
Eventually, I think I'll go to an Adaptec scsi, and a cdr - but that is
going to be a new can of worms, and I'll probably consider unite for both
the scanner and the cdr, at that time.
Thanks for any help you can give.
