Help! Cannot set sys to PROTECTONLY=YES without crashes

Hey folks,

I've been trying to run my system PROTECTONLY=YES and am having no success at
all. I spent about 8 hours last nite messing with it. When I set the
config.sys to that I get through all the startup services and drivers loading
pre-WPS fine, but when the WPS attempts to start the system halts. For a
while I was getting an error code, but now just a blank screen. It will
CAD to restart, but then it needs to do a self check on C: before it can
proceed again.

Strangely enough, I can use PROTECTONLY=YES if I run the 16-colour VGA generic
drivers. I suspect that this is an issue with my Matrox Millenium or its
drivers. I have tried all three
of the revs out that I found.

Please, can someone shed some light on what is going on? I am very frustrated
as I have set previous systems to this and it worked, but now I am committed
to computing in OS/2 without the overhead of segmenting my system's memory to
accomodate DOS. I figure I can run my few 16-bit Doze' progs under nT
(yeah..sure.) I have replaced almost all of my software with native OS/2 code
at this point.

Here is the system list:

Warp Blue Spine -- tried with and without FixPack 10

P5 120-S on Tyan Titan-III w/512 pb, 64 megs FPM parity 60ns RAM

Matrox Millenium 4 meg BIOS 1.19 - have used drivers 1.0, 1.1 & 1.2 (presently
1.1)

NEC 6FG @ 1280 x 1024 65k colour depth

Mix of EIDE & SCSI Drives, HA = Adaptec 1522 (yech...that's gotta go!)

TIA!

Ciao,
Mike
