Thanks. Below is the stuff I've collected so far. I'm hesitant to make
much of a diagnosis/analysis and prefer to let folks make of the data what
they will. In general, the 2940uw/2940 + Matrox Millenium combo seems to
work more often than not, but that is only based on the responses I have
collected.
It amazes me how difficult it is to find a combination of hardware that will
work without 'gotchas'. For instance, I am now considering as an
alternative to the expensive (and apparently sometimes problematic Adaptec 2940xx
controllers) the NCR825/875 based scsi controllers for use with a new Tyan
Titan III and a couple of Quantum Prodrive scsi disks I already have. These
disks have been working very well in a 486/SIS with Adaptec 1542CF
controller, running OS/2 Warp, and Dos/Win. Tyan offers controllers based
on these chips, however Pat Duffy's September 1995 PCI SCSI FAQ
http://warp.eecs.berkeley.edu/os2/workbench/pci_scsi.html says that the Tyan
controllers in particular WILL NOT WORK WITH OS/2! Don't know if this is
still true, but I've got an email into Tyan tech support to try and find
out. Moreover, I have more than one post claiming that these NCR based
controllers have problems with Quantum Prodrive scsi disks. Is it just me
or is PC hardware compatibility getting WORSE and not better every
year? It appears VERY easy to make an expensive mistake. I guess that's
why people buy Dells etc. In one additional attempt to really confuse the
issue, I'm also considering the Cyrix 6x86 (120/133 (if supported)/150)
series chips as an alternative to a Pentium in the Tyan board. Of course
I have NO data on the combination of the Tyan w/Cyrix 6x86+Adaptec (or
NCR)+Matrox video card using OS/2 or any other environment. I know one
thing, no matter how much I research and/or plan, something's gonna come up
I haden't considered/known about. I guess I like this stuff or I'm a
glutton for punishment etc.
Any comments/info on any of these issues welcome.

The problem appears to be with the BIOS of the Adaptec
controller card and its interference with the BIOSes of
the various motherboards. Adaptec Tech Support has told
more than one person that BIOS version 1.23 should
fix the problem (current is 1.21, 1.22 was a "special issue"
that doesn't count).
A particular motherboard may NOT exhibit the problem
with the Adaptec controller; for example, a collegue has
a TYAN TITAN III and the 2940UW and Matrox Millenium - he
doesn't seem to have any problems. I, on the other hand,
have the AMI ATLAS PCI II and the 2940UW and the Matrox
Millenium and I can't get Warm Reboots to work.
See the MRBIOS web page FAQ, http://www.mrbios.com , for
more words on buggy Adaptec BIOSes.

My "pleasure"...
Still waiting for that BIOS upgrade to see if it
solves my inability to warm reboot; all fingers
are now pointing at the Adaptec BIOS as the
root of the problem, so we'll see.
After THAT, I can worry about the apparent
lack of speed of the 166MHz AMI Atlas PCI II
this is all stuffed in (performance about 20%
below expected numbers on most benchmarks)!

Disable any IRQ assigned to the millenium and download a utility
called pcispy.exe from our bbs or ftp site(see list below). Run "pcispy.exe
-l" to show you the list. If it shows you conflict between the millenium and
other pci cards run "pcispy..exe -c" to correct the problem.

Problems of win95 with Tyan Titan III MB

Hello,
I upgraded my motherboard with, Tyan Titan III, P133 Mhz and 512 KB
pipeline cache.
When I boot up with Win95 it recognizes the chipset etc and then it goes
ahead and tries to find the contoleers installed.
I have Adaptec 2940 UW and Matrox Impression PCI cards.
It recognizes the Adaptec SCSI card and tries to install it and the machine
hangs. The same thing happens with Matrox if I switch the PCI slots and
put Matrox ahead of Adaptec. The other card I have is Sound Blaster card.
The above setup used to work perfectly with a no name 486 PCi MB.
I have tried slowing down the memory access etc from Bios and the machine
still hangs.
I have two 32 MB simms of 70 ns. I also changed the simms to two 16 MB,
70 ns simms and the problem still occurs.
Any idea what I should do.
Any suggestions or comments is appreciated.
I am sure the machine and MB might be okay as I run OS2 perfectly with the
same setup and with same BIOS settings.
So this definitely is a problem of WIN95.
All help is appreciated.
Thanks.
Dinesh

Hello,
You may have to copy the whoel WIN 95 again. You donot loose any data
or config files. The new installation will just recopy the files.
After reinstallation have the new drivres disk for 2940 UW ready as it will
ask for it.
Then everything will be okay.
Adaptec and Matrox donot conflict and is a great combination.
The tyan II board is awesome. To get more spped try out Mr Bios bios software.

far with the EXACT setup I plan to use. If you would be so kind to take a
moment, it would help a great deal to know the exact model and bios revision of
your components to ensure at least one known working setup using these
components. I'm actually more interested in the components functioning
together AT ALL etc than specifically under Win95, though it's helpful to know
those tricks too. For myself, I'll be running OS/2, the usual Dos+WIn 3.x,
probably NT, and maybe Win95.

Great, good to know. Do you know if your adaptec was a Rev A,B etc?
(apparently it matters).

Any further comments about the hardware appreciated,
Tyan/Adaptec/Matrox bios etc. I have more than one post from users

Are you liking the Matrox? Dos games work ok/fast? What *doesn't*
work? OS/2 returning to PM from Dos game/graphics mode, mpeg, avi,
quicktime for windows etc.? Any pure Dos/Win stuff which doesn't work
quite right?

Hi, Don...
I am using Titan III and a 2940UW with an old Diamond Viper 2M VRAM
card. I planned to replace the video with the Matrox Millenium, until I
read your posting. Please let me know the outcome, if anything
positive. I suspect the driver is the problem, and wonder if you asked
Matrox if they had any possible solution, assuming it was the driver?
Otherwise the Titan III has been OK, and I have another running with IDE
drive. The 2940UW is used with SCSI HD as the boot drive. Very quick!

Well, this doesn't really help, but I have
Tyan Titan III (512KB, PB - 16mb EDO) Award BIOS v2.5
Adaptec 2940 (BIOS v1.16)

I would like to hear more about this, Todd. I have a Titan III, and
just ordered a 2940UW, and was about to oredr a Matrox Millenium,
XL-MPEG and Media TV. Now I'm not so sure. I have not seen earlier
postings concerning this mixture. If you have them saved I sure would
appreciate it if you could forward them via email. Or perhaps a
synopsis of what the reported problems involve?
For what it is worth: I am currently using the 2940 without a problem
on the Titan. However, it is not the ultra-wide and I have an ATI Mach
64 video board for now.
Does the problem revolve about the MATROX / 2940UW, or is the TitanIII
a critical factor?
Also - by the way: ASUS has announced their new motherboard (I can't
recall the model!) which looks to be a replacemnet for the Titan III.
It supports the new Intel Triron 2 chipset and up to 200MHz CPU. I
don't have anything yet on the other features.
Let's keep in touch on this - Ithink we are about to share a problem!

I will find out soon. Sometime over the next week or so I should be

Latest Matrox 2.22.39 drivers
Latest Matrix 1.9 BIOS
Matrox directX
Now when I kick off "cd vision" I get the following message:
CD VISION:Either CD Format Unrecognized Or CD Drive is Empty
Now I've been reading in a couple of posting here that the Win95 default
CDROM driver does not support CD-I (Phillips) CD's. OK. So I'll disable all
32 bit mode drivers in Win95 and load the CD driver and MSCDEX from config.sys
and autoexec. NOT.. that does not work either. I get the same error message.
If anybody has been able to get this to work, your help would be
greatly appreciated.
Cheers,

I'll second that. 4MB Millenium, Adaptec 2940, and SuperMicro CMS
P133. I wouldn't say it works flawlessly, but I have never seen any
evidence of a conflict between the SCSI adapter and the video card.

After upgrading to a Matrox Millennium BIOS greater than 1.5, I had no problem
with my AHA-2940 BIOS 1.11 on my Intel ZAPPA motherboard. While waiting for
the Millennium BIOS to be updated I replaced the AMI BIOS with the Microid
Research BIOS, which solved the problem. Meanwhile MATROX has made a couple of
utility programs for the Millennium, that should help you in solving PCI
conflicts.

Well call me lucky... I've got an Adaptec 2940 AND ALSO an Adaptec 2940W in my
all-SCSI Micron P133 (PCI bus), AND ALSO a Matrox MGA Millennium. Because of
the way the Micron PCI slots work, the two Adaptec cards use IRQ #11 and IRQ
#9. The MGA card, also PCI but does not use an IRQ, is in a third PCI slot
which by Micron motherboard has to be a duplicate of either IRQ#11 or IRQ#9.
Well, I have absolutely no problems whatsoever with any of my hardware. I do
not believe I did anything non-default with the SCSI Select configuration of
the two 2940's (other than to set terminations correctly), nor do I remember
doing anything unusual with any dip switches, jumpers, etc., on any hardware.
Call me Mr. Lucky, for having a new motherboard from Micron.

<Big Snip>
Yes, getting the Adaptec 2940 and the Millennium to coexist in some systems
does seem to be a nightmare. I've had absolutely no luck here using a
GA 486IM motherboard, and god knows I've tried.
Unfortunately neither Adaptec nor Matrox seem to be able/willing to offer
and kind of definitive solution.
Matrox suggested that I upgrade the motherboard BIOS, which I've done
without success. (The Millennium was already flashed to the latest BIOS
release.)
They also seem to have acknowledged in their tech support
forum on CIS that some users have had problems with 2940/Millennium
combinations. However, they point out that they have not been able
to replicate the problem for themselves.
Adaptec suggested the following:
***********************************************************************
Make sure if possible not to assign the Adaptec card the interrupt =9
as it is shared with the video card. If your boot device is not a SCSI hard
drive then you may want to disable the bios on the Adaptec card to see if it
helps.
The other settings on the card only apply to the types of SCSI devices
connected to the card and EVERYTHING else is taken care of by the PCI
Architecture
The other things about the Adaptec AHA2940 card to be aware of are as follow:
1) Card must be in a 5.0 Volt Bus Mastering Slot ...( lookup info in m/b
doc'. )
2) Must be set to INT-A..( Interrupt Structure ). if there is an option in
M/B CMOS
3) Must be set to LEVEL TRIGGERING again in M/B CMOS.
4) Must assign an INTERRUPT to the PCI slot card is in, again if option
available in CMOS.
5) Motherboard must be PCI 2.0 Compliant .
*************************************************************************
I hope you have better luck than I did. My solution was to ditch the 2940
for the time being and switch to Adaptecs Vl-Bus 2842A card.

I'm using almost the same hardware as you do (Gigabyte 586ATEP, P100,
Adaptec 2940, Millenium 2MB) and I have no problems at all. Did you
disable disconnect/reconnect for the hd in the controller setup (press
CRTL-A while booting) ?

Check to see if you have the latest 2940 BIOS (v1.16). It is available from
Adaptec's BBS. The problem is you'll need to reprogram the EPROM yourself,
as Adaptec uses non-flash-upgradeable parts.
Another thing to try is to see if both PCI cards are using the same PCI
interrupt. They shouldn't be. If it is available in BIOS, see if you can
change the trigger from EDGE to LEVEL (or LEVEL to EDGE) trigger.
I've seen both cards coexist nicely on a few Triton-based motherboards.

Well call me lucky... I've got an Adaptec 2940 AND ALSO an Adaptec 2940W in my

I'm sorry, but I've missed a whole bunch of information here. I have
a Millenium with 4MB WRAM, a GIGABYTE motherboard, and an Adaptec 2940
(regular scsi2). I am having problems with them. The scsi bus seems
to reset itself after some large copying or backing up of files on the
scsi bus. It crashes the system and it must be turned off. One
fellow told me that it was from the old chipset on the 2940. There
are two small square chips on the card and it has a number on the
lowest line. the last two numbers are the version #. Mine are 10. He
said that any card with 16 or lower are not compatible with Triton
chipsets but any card with a version greater than 16 are fine and that
I should find a card that has that #. I haven't found one yet but it
is a possible cause of the problems. I guess this email is to both
ask you what problems you have had and also to help you a bit by
telling you what I know or have heard. Hope this helps, and I hope
that you can help me here too.
Thanks,
Dan.

<BIG SNIP>
You mentioned a GA486IM motherboard in your post. This is infact a
Gigabyte board not Gateway, and I can confirm problems in getting this board
plus Matrox Millennium and Adaptec 2940 to co-exist.
There are basically two problems,
1) System lockups in general use, a typical example would be a lockup
after clicking on a drop down menu with MS Windows.
This doesn't seem to have anything to do with the Adaptec, and was cured
by flashing the motherboard with a newer version of the AWARD BIOS.
I've read a couple of other posts where Millennium users were experiencing
similar problems, and in Email between myself and the Matrox tech support
on CIS, they acknowledged that there are problems with the Millennium
and Awards Modular BIOS revision 4.50g.
2) Warm Reboot always fails.
This seems to be a BIOS problem with the 2940, certain motherboards and
the Millennium. Hopefully a new release of the Adaptec BIOS will do
the trick.

Don,
Thanks for your e-mail. I am not sure what fixed the problem
but things started working over the weekend. I had been
copying the aic7870.add file to the hard drive. The only thing
that I did that appears to have fixed the problem, was to change which
slot the Adaptec SCSI card was in.
I had also heard about turning off power management. I have had that
off from the start. Thanks again for your e-mail.
