Lest this mislead people into suspecting their motherboards
alone rather than the interaction of their motherboards
with the Adaptec BIOS...
The Adaptec BIOSes of 1.2+ version are KNOWN to have problems
with numerous motherboards and motherboard BIOSes, but not
with ALL such entities; for example, see:
http://www.mrbios.com
http://www.microsoft.com
and their FAQS. The pertinent problem with the 1.2 BIOS was that
it ALWAYS decompressed itself in a certain location; that location
conflicted with, among other motherboards, those that used the
Pheonix or MrBios BIOS. The pertinent problem with the 1.21 BIOS
was that it searched for a free memory area to uncompress iteself
in, arbitrarily deciding that the definition of "free" was that the
area was zero-filled; this conflicted with the MrBios BIOS and
most certainly conflicted with the WINBios of my AMI Atlas PCI II
motherboard.
This is NOT a system board problem.
YMMV, simply due to pure random chance that YOUR motherboard BIOS
and its functionality won't get stepped on by the Adaptec pre-1.23
BIOS.
For the record, version 1.23 of the Adaptec 2940UW BIOS as
interacting with the entire hardware setup we have (as previously
described) disallows warm reboots and disallows "push button reset"
reboots under a virgin DOS operating system.
Interestingly enough, though, there appear to be few if any
problems with the new 1.23 BIOS when Windows 95 reboots itself.
