Quantum 2GB fast/wide SCSI drives: any problems?

A dealer recommended the Quantum 2.2GB fast/wide SCSI drive (8.5ms
access time), and quoted me a price of $691. I was wondering if:

1. anyone had any good or bad experiences with this drive

2. the price is good

3. anyone has any recommendation for a different 2GB drive

Which model drive? Quantum has a number of drives that fall into this
general capacity range and without specific models, it's tough to give an
accurate answer.

Doesn't IBM make some pretty kick-*ss SCSI drives in this size?
I'd think an IBM employee should get at least SOME kind of discount!

My only other recommendation would be to pay 50% more and get the
Quantum 4.3G model now. (Just let me hear you say: "But I know
I'll NEVER need THAT much disk space!" I wanna get a recording
and play it back for you in a year.)

I recently integrated 8 Quantum VP32210 Capella drives. They cost me
about $750 each six weeks ago. I'm not sure if this is the same one
your dealer recommended, but here goes anyway.

They were placed into some 133Mhz Pentiums running Win95. I had a
little trouble with the hardware detect phase, but that was operator
head space.

One drive was DOA, and that is why you pay a little extra by buying
from a local vendor -- I got it replaced in two hours...

I didn't run any intense benchmarks, but I loaded up Heretic, and the
three megabyte .zip file unzipped itself in a flash. Win95 ran very
smoothly (I did have 64MB in these units)...

These Pentiums had a DTC PCI SCSI-2 F/W adapter; a Taiwan clone, but
nevertheless apparently very fast.

As far a temperature is concerned, I thought they were running hot,
but my hardware guru said they were fine.

Noise -- very acceptable, hardly noticeable.

Overall impression: Very good drive, with the caveat that I didn't
do a very intensive benchmark of drive performance, so your mileage
may vary...

I would buy them again.

Good luck,
Kevin

Hm. I've had experiences with 2 different FW Quantums.
One was fast, one was half-fast. At the $691 price you are
probably talking about the VP. I did measured/timed reads &
writes through the file system under SCO at about 1.75MB/sec
for 100 Meg files with the VP.

I did measured/timed reads/writes at about 3.5MB/sec write and
about 4.2MB/sec reads on a 2940UW Adaptec and 3.25MB/sec to
about 4MB/sec on a DPT PCI.

The XP is in the mid $800 range. It's printed specs show it to
be about 10% faster than the Seagate Barracudas. I have those
in a similarly configured system but never got as fast as the
XP. HOWEVER - similar is NOT indentical.

>3. anyone has any recommendation for a different 2GB drive

VP for price and the XP for performance.
