Help! SCSI Zip drive under OS/2 :(

Does any of you have been able to *USE* Zip drive under OS2? OS2 does recognized my drive, but I can't access it. It asked me to format the disk, even though it's already formatted for PC. The drive is working fine under DOS/Win (dual boot with OS2), I can read the disk from DOS. I've tried to use the OAD driver from Iomega, but it doesn't support my Adaptec 2940 which I also attached my CDROM on and it's working fine. Any help or suggestion is greatly appreciated. Please post them here. Thank in advanced. TK ;)

I too had problems with my removable syquest until I got the drivers from hobbes. Personally, I prefer the lockflt driver which locks the drive for the session. Just a question of whether you want removability with slow access, or fast access with no disk swapping... Paul eddie@web.apc.org

It's not 100% functional, as there is no OS/2 port of ZIP tools, but it's the best you're going to get under OS/2. Call IOMega and complain loudly to them about not supporting *STANDARD* SCSI. Try the syquest drivers. I'm using them successfully to read from my zip
drive (can't write to it yet though because I don't have dos installed and
can't figure out how to otherwise un-write protect the only disk I have
which is the tools disk - any hints? can I do it form a dos bootdisk?).
Only problem with the syquest drivers is that it puts the zip drive as a
second primary partition instead of as the last drive letter which means
you get things shuffled a bit which is especially bad if your os/2 partition
is logical. For me though, I only have one partition on my laptop's puny
drive so things worked out fine...

I recall from some where that if you format a zip drive under dos OS/2 not going to see it same as if you formated in os/2 dos isn't going to see it. Not sure if theirs a fix or not or where I saw it. Later

Just following myself up to say that the syquest drivers work fine for my
scsi zipdrive except as I noted before it uses it as a primary partition.
It reads/writes the same format as dos so you don't have to reformat the
disks like you do if you don't run any drivers and apparently works with
just about any scsi card. So besides the caveat about putting the zipdrive
as primary, it works real well (I just did a backup and the compression
actually was holding things up rather than the drive - my laptop is only
a 486-50).
Now if only iomega would rewrite their drivers like syquest did with the
added bonus of not putting the drive letter as a primary partition, that would
be perfect.

I downloaded the Zip drivers from hobbes (v. 2.33), and after cleaning up my config.sys file (it had a line that was looking for an adaptec card as I had noticed that the zip zoom scsi is actually made by adaptec. BTW the readme file or the manual file that comes with the disk warned me of this), I have my zip up and running. My system has 2 EIDE HD's (1 meg and 1.2 meg), a SCSI CD-ROM attached to a PAS-16 sound card (trantor SCSI I think), and now my ZIP drive. Theyt are configured/partitioned as follows: drive 1 c: primary 100mg DOS/win3.11 FAT c: primary 250mg Win95 FAT d: logical 250mg win programs FAT e: logical 250mg win programs FAT f: logical 150mg win data files FAT drive 2 g: logical 250mg OS/2 swapper HPFS h: logical 250mg OS/2 empty HPFS i: logical 250mg OS/2 data files HPFS j: logical 250mg OS/2 programs HPFS k: logical 280mg OS/2 system HPFS CD-ROM (trantor scsi) l: 2x CD ZIP drive m: logical 100mg utilities FAT The drivers selected the drive letter and I am very pleased as I was concerned from reading other posts that it would format itself as a primary partition and mess up all my file structures. From what I can tell, under warp the ZIP functions just like a floppy and I can change disks whenever I want to. Now for my question, is there any backup software that does compression that would work with this setup and allow me to reboot from floppy then restore from the ZIP drive? Thanks, Doug

Yes! Our Back Again/2 Personal Edition features several levels of data compression, a full GUI interface, a complete scheduler capable of scheduling up to 48 backup jobs, a standalone restore utility for complete disaster recovery capability, and more! A demo is available as BA2PR31D.ZIP on our BBS at (612)730-4157 and may also be found on ftp.cdrom.com. The eval edition also supports SCSI and IDE tape drives, but since you don't need that support, the Personal Edition is what you want. The SRP is $49.95 but you can find it cheaper from a number of OS/2 resellers. Thanks, Brad Benson CDS, Inc.

Any registered BA/2 Personal Edition user can upgrade to the Professional Edition for $49 directly from CDS. Cheers, Brad Benson CDS, Inc. PS - I see you're a Descent lover in Rochester! I get down there quite a bit (I grew up there) and I think I'm pretty good at Descent - perhaps we should have a match sometime!
