1. do you have the latest PTI1S506.ADD? Promise BBS 408-452-1267 has
a file OS2_141.zip containing PTI1S506.ADD dated 12-12-94.
2. Install builds a couple of sets of CONFIG.SYS files
what I do:
copy Install disk, on copy 'ren ibm1s506.add *.ibm', then copy latest
PTI add to this disk using IBM name 'copy ?\pti1s506.add a:\ibm1s506.add'
Then, during install process, when the hard disk is to be booted (clue: install
says pls remove disk from drive A and press Enter to continue), rmv the disk,
but instead of pressing ENTER, do a ctrl/alt/del and at BM boot Dos, then
copy the current PTI1S506.ADD into boot\OS2\BOOT subdir,
and edit config.sys in os2 root dir to use BASEDEV=PTI1S506.ADD instead of IBM.
The paper book with Warp refers to Promise caching cards and (unclearly) explains
how to use the IBM driver (use /!SMS to turn off SMS). But, you still have to do this
in EVERY config.sys that is about to be booted (ie, Install floppy and at least 2 HD).
FYI correct form is BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD /A:0 /U:0 /!SMS
(assuming you have one card and one drive) - parms are positional, so /A /U must
be in place to specify /!SMS
It appears the confusion is due to Promise doing a great job of 'looking' like a
normal 506 type device, but not really being one. I wish the Promise tech people
would talk to the IBM ones and agree on a way to fix this (ie, do SOMETHING that
OS/2 could detect early on). Every time I try another OS/2, I have to go through
this. (I have a 4030VL2) Sigh, but I love them both.....................
PS: do NOT trust a system installed with either 'old' PTI drivers or IBM driver w/o
the overrides, ESPECIALLY with HPFS - 'bad' INI files create creaping havoc!
Pat Zerkle,
my opinions are my own, not my employer's
.... been using OS/2 since the V2 LA version, and enjoying it
