I think you got it backwards, Tim.  I think he(she?) is saying windowed
sessions work fine, it's the full screen ones that get the funny
characters.

The only way I know how to do this is to set your DOS box to have video
mode restricted to CGA (or was is Herc?).  (You do this to get LOTS
more memory, over 700K, in your DOS box.)  Then OS/2 emulates character
mode fine in a window, but if you try to switch it to full screen, and
your VGA card doesn't support CGA/Herc, you'll get garbage as OS/2
tries to put your card into that mode.  So make sure you have video
restriction mode set to "None" before you go to full screen.  (You
can't change the video mode restriction on a running DOS box, only the
startup icon.)
