I don't think I've seen this info pop up yet, so I thought I bring
in the bad news. For those of you who don't have the joy of plowing through
Prodigy at 2400bd every night, I found this in the computer club board.
It is in reference to the OS.2 Serivce Package, which should have been
released Sept. 30. Here is the reason none of you have seen it yet:
>TIME: 09/30 5:51 PM
>FROM: MEL HALLERMAN (BTKT42A)
>SUBJECT: SERVICE PACK STATUS
>Two weeks ago, I posted advanced planning information on the
>upcoming service pack for OS/2 2.0. It had a target date of
>9/30 for electronic distribution. As with all advanced
>information and target dates, there was the danger that the
>target would not be met. The service pack will not be
>available tonight but is targeted for two more weeks. I have
>appended the latest advanced information below: <MORE>
>OS/2 2.0 SERVICE PAK ADVANCE INFORMATION UPDATE
>IBM intends to produce two versions of a Service Pak for
>OS/2 2.0. One version will contain fixes for 2.0 and will
>include the 32-bit Graphics Engine. The second version will
>contain only the fixes. Both of these Paks can be applied to
>the 2.0 product as released in March (with any interim
>fixes). These Paks are mutually exclusive. If you install
>one and change your mind, you would need to reinstall the
>original 2.0 and then apply the second Pak.
>The Pak with the 32-bit GRE was targeted to be available
>electronically by the end of September. IBM has been working
>feverishly to meet that target. However, based on feedback
>generated by the earlier announcement and results of
>testing, we have decided to include additional fixes in the
>Paks. These fixes require additional code and test time. In
>addition to testing these fixes, IBM is performing tests on
>the Pak as an entity to insure that the individual APAR
>fixes are compatible when integrated into the system. IBM
>continues to make and test fixes and to assess the content
>of the Pak to ensure that the proper fixes are included and
>that high quality fixes are delivered.
>The version of the Pak containing the 32-bit GRE will be
>made electronically via IBMLINK OS/2 BBS, CIS, NSC BBS,
>INTERNET, and other external sources as soon as it is
>ready. The current outlook is that it will be available prior
>to mid-October. The second Pak will be available at a later
>date.
>Full Pak contents, delivery mechanisms, and availability
>will be announced once the Paks are completed and schedules
>are formalized.
>Mel Hallerman[IBM]
In addition to this bit of info, I also found a post that said that
the Service Pack would be distributed on 14 3.5 inch disks. If anybody
can verify this, I'd like to hear it.
Hope this helped,
Curtis Malasky
