I am willing to let two VAX/VMS books go for very reasonable prices.
Make me an offer, and if yours is the best, you will get one or both for what
you offer. For all practical purposes there's no minimum price, but postage is
extra. The books (in excellent condition) are:
1. "Computer Programming and Architecture: the VAX", by Henry M.
Levy & Richard H. Eckhouse, Jr. Digital Press: Bedford, Mass. 1989
This book is an exhaustive treatment of all aspects of VAX hardware
and microcode. All the VAX instruction set is described in detail
and similarities & differences of models are dealt with. Physical
I/O devices and performance enhancement options specific to VAXes
are gone into. VMS is presented as an example of a VAX operating
system, and what is done to accommodate it. However, an appendix
summarizes the ULTRIX assembler and certain UNIX I/O conventions
adopted there. A chapter explicitly compares VAX to other archi-
tectures: IBM 370, CDC Cyber, Intel 80386, Berkeley RISC II. And
the last chapter tackles the futuristic topic with examples (like
the Cray-1) of Parallelism, and how far VAX has gone down that road
2. "VMS File System Internals", by Kirby McCoy. Digital Press:
Bedford, Mass. 1990. The second of two.
This book describes in exhaustive detail the on-disk physical
structure of Files-11 and the logical structure of RMS etc.-
formatted files. Next come the utilities for handling volumes
and cacheing reads & writes on a single node. Chapters 5 & 6 deal
with the ACP functions, especially QIO & XQP, with which the VMS
O.S. executes disk IO in an orderly fashion. These control-blocks
and their subsections are referenced by means of very many logical
names, all given. They comprise the data areas and the code that
processes them, in P0, P1 & S0 space. The last two chapters cover
serialization techniques for allowing multiple requests for the
same file, and for giving whole VAXclusters access to libraries.
Sorry if it sounds difficult. This is an advanced book and needs
to be used with other VMS guides and manuals.
Write me by private e-mail and make me an offer. Chances are that you will get
one or both very cheaply, and I'll arrange to send you them in the mail. My
address is VOGTPATR@MAX.CC.UREGINA.CA . -- Werrn Vogt
P.S. I'm also selling the "RSTS/E Programming Manual" with a hard binder... .
