Xinu Internetworking Release and GNU

I recieved the Xinu "Internetworking Release" in the mail several weeks
ago, and have been busy porting it to use GNU (68k) development tools.
I did the same thing with Xinu 7.1 several months ago, and posted
notice of that in this group.

The "Internetworking Release" has got the TCP code in it, and its
directory structure has changed considerably. The "Internetworking
Release" is the tape you get from Prentice Hall when you mail in
the pink card in the back of Comer's (Volume II) TCP/IP book.
Purdue (I think) is calling this Xinu version 7.9.

The code on the tape comes ready to run on a 3/50, and ready to
compile using the Sun3 supplied cc. I booted the executable that
was on the tape, and it "came up", but I never got the shell login
prompt. That is pretty standard and is actually what I expected,
because I had yet to "configure" Xinu. The key item in the
configuration was setting correct values for the time server, name
server, and remote file server. So I did this, and
re-compiled Xinu.....

....which took over an hour on my 3/50. ;-(

When I tried running this "re-compiled" version, I almost immediately
got a Xinu trap. Bad News!

So I thought about it awhile, and finally decided that before I go
in and start debugging, I should re-compile Xinu again, this time
with the optimizer turned off. I modified the Makefile, and re-compiled,
and this time it worked!!! And that made me pretty happy. ;-)

By process of elimination, I discovered that dma.c was the only
file which needed to be compiled with optimization off.

This little fact should at least make it into the release notes.

On to the GNU port....

Which wasn't really too bad. I rewrote dma.c and added an assembly
file for getfc3 and setfc3. There were lots of minor fixes needed
so that the compiler wouldn't whine. Overall, not too bad though.

And I've got a working Xinu 7.9 now that compiles with the GNU (68k)
compiler, assembles with the GNU (gas) assembler, and links with
the GNU (ld) linker!! All hosted on a sparcstation. Xinu now
compiles in about 16 minutes which is over 4 times faster than on
a 3/50. I have yet to completely test all the features, but most
of them seem to work just fine. Ping works, and the name and time
packets seem to work. I've got tftpd ported to Xinu and that still
works.

If anyone is interested in this code, or other discussions about
Xinu, please contact me, or post to the newsgroup.
