One problem is that since 1982 the U.S. Supreme Court has been
notably silent, deferring to the Court of Appeals for the Federal
Circuit. So for important patent decisions since 1982 one must
read Federal Circuit cases. For patents, it is simply incomplete
if one limits oneself to reading Supreme Court cases.

I think most people who want to save time and read the right cases
would not be well served reading individual Supreme Court cases
one by one. Instead, it pays to find a good treatise or looseleaf
service and read cases and synopses there.

I don't know how the BPL is for intellectual property treatises
and looseleaf services, but it would not hurt to look. Examples of
treatises are Nimmer on Copyright, Deller's Walker on Patents,
Chisum on Patents, and McCarthy on Trademarks. An example of a looseleaf
service is the BNA Patent, Copyright, Trademark Journal.

If the goal is really to read the full text of all the opinions,
I would suggest the United States Patent Quarterly, a set of several
hundred volumes covering all significant intellectual property
cases in the United States in the full text. It includes digests that
can be helpful to one seeking cases on particular topics.

Online, one way to be able to browse the full text of intellectual
property cases is Lexis, in the Patent, Copyright, and Trademark
libraries. Lexis is very expensive except that most law students
can get it for free while in law school.

Hope this helps.
