The article in Cryptologia says that "Gemstar claims copyright and patent protection for the PlusCode numbers and software to create them." Without more information it is difficult to know just what this means. It is rare for anyone to get a patent in less than about two years -- does anyone recall how long ago VCR Plus has been around? The commenter (Bajpai) correctly summarizes the pros and cons of seeking patent protection on something like this that is, in a very real sense, self-revealing.
