In article <4688@cluster.cs.su.oz.au> nevries@cc.ruu.nl (Nico de Vries.) writes: Does anyone know if DES is patented? If not is anyone outside the US allowed to sell DES software (including to the US)? DES is based on a cryptographic system invented by IBM called "Lucifer". IBM has (at least) some US patents on Lucifer, according to press reports -- they agreed to give them up if the US government adopted Lucifer as an encryption standard. I suspect that IBM obtained patents on Lucifer in other countries as well. However, the patents may have exipred by now, since the Lucifer work was done in the 1970's.
