The August 14, 1992 issue of Science magazine contains three good articles on the issue of patents and gene sequences. A while ago the NIH applied for patents on 2750 partial complementary DNA sequences, causing great concern in the biotech and patent communities. The articles are: "Genes, Patents and Product Development" by Rebecca Eisenberg (professor of law at the University of Michigan", "Genome Research: Fulfilling the Public's Expectations for Knowledge and COmmercialization" by Reid Adler (director of the office of technology transfer at the NIH), and "Patents on Random Complementary DNA Fragments" by Thomas Kiley (attorney and director for biotech companies). The articles are well written with lots of legal references. Well worth taking a look at. Greg Aharonian Source Translation & Optimization
