Article #1397The 486DX/2 chips .... are they *direct* replacements for the DX ?

So I hear all this stuff about the 486DX/2 being a direct replacement for
the DX, and that any motherboard with a DX in it can support a DX/2 by
simply replacing the chip. Well, I have a chance to get a 486DX/2 66 and I
have a motherboard that only *explicitly* supports a DX 33.
Do I need a special socket or can I
just drop the DX/2 chip in in place of the DX ? Are they pin-compatible ? I
really need to know because once I buy the chip I can't send it back and
it's pretty expensive. Also, I have a 66.666 MHz x-tal in place ... do I
have to change it ?
Barring that, I may trade the DX/2 66 for a DX/33 and some cash, so if it
won't work, I might still buy it and trade someone who *can* use it.
Let me know if you can help or if you would be interested in the chip if it
won't work in my board.
Thanks,
